February 1st, 2013 01:13 pm

as I was cooking lunch (whilst simultaneously starring in my own imaginary cooking show, where I am a fabulous hybrid of Jamie Oliver & Nigella Lawson-- in talent, that is, not body parts and/or facial features-- though I wonder what that would look like? no doubt it's on the internet somewhere) I started pondering things that I never knew I needed to know before, except that now I'd thought of them I also knew I wouldn't be content until I knew the definitive answer. things like, "do babies cry in the womb?" because, y'know, nine times out of ten, the nanosecond they're born, they're wailing like it's the end of the world-- which isn't the case at all, is it, because their world is still pretty damn new. ANYWAY. according to the god of definitive answers (internet version) -- better-known as Mr Google, YES THEY DO. also, apparently I'm not the first person BY FAR to have pondered this over the preparation of a baked potato*. though possibly not everyone else was thinking about it while baking potatoes on their imaginary cooking show, however. ALL THE SAME, GOOD TO KNOW.

in other news:

- Miss almost-16 (next week! how the fuck did THAT happen?) has her very first part-time job, and last night she came home clutching her very first paycheque. I'm ridiculously proud of her. ♥

- we recently had a family getaway to Akaroa, where we stayed on the Kokopu Estate in Kokopu Cottage. omg you guys, I swear it was the best holiday I have ever been on in my LIFE. the cottage was gorgeous-- rustic & charming, & the location & surroundings were pure magic. no phone, no tv-- just trees & native bush & birdsong & nightskies so filled with stars that it made me a little weepy. I want to go back there a thousand times & just breathe it all in. naturally, I took a metric fuckload of photos & you can see some of them below, & the rest can be seen here, should you be so inclined.

...

- we've all seen this video of JC singing, haven't we? just in case:

I have no idea if that embedding code will even work, so just in case it doesn't: [ here. ] sigh, JC, sigh. please keep singing. you should never have stopped in the first place, you asshole.
- CHRIS EVANS. am I right, or am I right? I'm right, aren't I? yeah, I thought so.

THAT IS ALL. if you'll excuse me, I'm off to google, "can humans peel their own skin off if they get a little bit too hot because the temperature is abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous? if so, how? also, how easy is it to slip back on again later?" YEAH, I LOVE THE INTERNET.

* relatedly, I'm also not the first person BY FAR to wonder, "do vegetables feel pain?", a question that occurred to me as I sat eating the aforementioned potatoes. in short: the jury's still out on that one, but I'd like to take a moment to apologise to my lunch, just in case.

while I love Instagram, I think my favourite photography app would have to be Hipstamatic. there are so many film & lens combinations to choose from, giving you a huge cross-section of effects to play & experiment with. my current favourite is the newly-released Tintype pack, which gives your photos the look of vintage tintype shots, complete with a gorgeous shallow depth of field, textures & hand-tinted colour effects. I am totally & utterly smitten. ♥

life, lately.

::::::
::::::
::::::
::::::

::five senses::

seeing::
an Avengers colouring book, my bottle of water, my ipod, SGA episodes. (we're rewatching all five seasons along with Miss 15, & she's HOOKED. ♥)

tasting::
homemade pizza, Whittakers raspberry white chocolate, coffee, water.

hearing::
a car passing by outside, the hum of the hard drive, the tap-tap-tap of my keyboard. I'm the only one awake in the house, so it's blessedly quiet. a typical Sunday night-- like a held breath before the exhale of the week ahead.

smelling::
Dorian perfume (which I've recently rediscovered in my wooden chest of bpal bottles & can't get enough of), the vases of spring flowers I have around the house, incense.

feeling::
filled with anticipation for the warmer, sunnier days that lie ahead, excited for the performance of Jesus Christ Superstar that we have tickets for on Tuesday evening, creative.

my house is filled with vases of spring flowers, & the scent is nothing short of delicious. today was sunny & warm & I had all the doors & windows open to let the breeze through. at night, I pull back the bedroom curtains to let the moonlight into the room & falling asleep watching the tree branches making patterns on the wall is magical. I love this time of year: it feels like I'm coming out of a long hibernation, slowly unfurling to fit into brand-new skin, & right now, that's pretty much the best feeling in the world. ♥

I had a bunch of stuff to do in town this morning, so I was out & about earlier than usual. I grabbed some breakfast (from McDs, because what morning isn't improved with a generous helping of sodium & saturated fat? exactly.) & then drove to the beach to hang out for a while. standing beside the ocean & watching the waves crash on the shore is all kinds of grounding for me. :)

these are all taken with my phone, because I didn't have my big camera with me. I think I'm going to toss my spare one in the car, just to have on hand for unexpected photo ops.

(please note the dog in the third picture down: he managed to sneakily lollop up to me amongst the roar of the surf & proceed to cause me to nearly keel over in fright at the sudden sensation of his wet nose all over my hand, haha. WELL PLAYED, THAT DOG. )

also: THE SUN IS OUT. after approximately 7003598572053200053 days of rain, this is nothing short of a MIRACLE.

15 year old: it's live action role playing. [ the "DUH" was implied.]
me: OMG I KNOW WHAT IT IS I HAVE BEEN ON THE INTERNET LONGER THAN YOU'VE BEEN ALIIIIIIIVE

I was about to say omg I've given birth to a total smartarse, but then I remembered I actually didn't. I just RAISED a smartarse instead, which is somehow far more satisfying. I HAVE OVERRIDDEN HER GENETIC CODE, MUAHAHAHAHA.

in other news, I got my lamb photos. even if I did have to hang out of the car window getting rained on to procure them.

spring is coming. no, really. it is!

I also may have procured an Avengers poster and Thor on blu-ray. not from the lambs, though. THAT'S JUST NOT HOW FARM ANIMALS WORK, OKAY.

note to self: don't taunt your uterus. it will always win. ALWAYS. (ow ow OW.)

ANYWAY.

hey, did we know that Justin Timberlake was now dabbling specialising in home decorating? he, along with stylist Estee Stanley (apparently responsible for those marionette outfits during the NSA days, and who, from some unfortunate angles, also looks alarmingly like she could eat your face off) is designing & curating homeware items & collections, to put it in HomeMint's own words. or, in Justin's own words: "HomeMint merges my love for interior design with my passion for innovation to create a personalized home collection -- it's like having your very own interior designer. A home should be inspiring and a reflection of you and HomeMint brings your individual style to your space."

somewhere Lance Bass is screaming into a lovingly curated Jacobean Print pillow* & cursing his missed opportunities.

but, yes! interior designer Justin! very unexpected, & something I probably wouldn't have even been aware of, had I not seen a link to the website on one of the design blogs I read. when worlds collide, apparently they sometimes do it in designer style & laced with masses of sequinned throw pillows & chunky hand-painted side dishes. WHO KNEW?

*my top pillow match according to my HomeStyleProfile! yes, of course I took the quiz & set up a profile. I mean, who wouldn't want Justin Timberlake picking out their perfectly-matched & highly-personalised houseful of slightly-offbeat & horrendously overpriced homewares? exactly.

it might be grey & overcast outside, but that's perfect weather for wandering along the beach with the dog, camera in hand.

so that's exactly what Ruby & I did earlier this morning. we pretty much had the place to ourselves-- save for a grouchy Schnauzer who attempted to attack her before being hastily whisked away by its apologetic owner, a couple of guys in a little rowboat & many, many seagulls. bliss. ♥

I took part in the March photo-a-day project (as seen here) using my ipod & instagram, & below is a mosaic of all the shots from the past 31 days.

March 2012.
1. up., 2. fruit., 3. neighbourhood., 4. bedside., 5. smile., 6. 5pm., 7. something I wore., 8. window., 9. red., 10. loud., 11. someone I talked to., 12. fork., 13. clouds., 14. sign., 15. car., 16. sunglasses., 17. green., 18. corner of my house., 19. funny., 20. before/after., 21. delicious., 22. kitchen sink., 23. moon., 24. animal., 25. breakfast., 26. key., 27. my name., 28. trash., 29. feet., 30. toy., 31. relax.

I missed out on completing the last month of my Project365 (also via instagram) last year due to an unplanned hospital stay & surgery, so I like to think that this makes up for it. well, sort of-- it's a punch in the eye for my inner procrastinator, anyway. :D

3 shots from Sunday.

watching:
- we're working our way through all six seaons of The Sopranos. I've seen the series before, but the mister hasn't. we're halfway through season three, & I think I'm enjoying it even more the second time around. ♥
- Mrs Brown's Boys. sometimes kind of cheesy, sometimes side-splitting-ly hilarious.
- Wreckers. hello, Benedict. hello.
- Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close. I'm pretty sure I sobbed through 99.9% of the entire movie. which means, of course, I adored it. but, ouch.
- John Carter. (or as I like to call it, "Tim Riggins in Space.") we actually went to the movies for this one-- the first time in approximately 238947925723 years or so. (and mostly because I had free passes, haha. also, there was NO WAY I was not going to see half-naked Taylor Kitsch in 3-D. C'MON NOW.) anyway, the 3-D aspect was somewhat disappointing-- the effects were great, but the colours were kind of....off, somehow? I don't know if that's what all 3-D movies look like, because this is the first one I've ever seen, & I guess I was expecting something a little more vibrant, perhaps. besides that, though, the movie itself was really good. lots of action & effects, & the aforementioned half-nakedness. Lynn Collins was a kick-ass princess, too. I've read mixed reviews around the web, & apparently the marketing of the film was somewhat badly-handled by Disney, but, whatever. I thought it was cool. :)

- Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius

listening:

- Bruce Springsteen: Wrecking Ball

addicted to:
- green olives with pimentos
- freshly-ground black pepper on EVERYTHING. (well, on everything except ice cream. but only because I haven't tried it. YET.)
- Hidden Chronicles on Facebook.
- tumblr. yes, still. it's like an endless stream of eye-candy, inspiration & thinky-thoughts, all fine-tuned to my exact specifications & with a glorious dollop of Viggo slathered on top. I approve, internet. SO MUCH. ♥

- A Dangerous Method (featuring Keira Knightley's jaw, a;jgdlkjskjshkldfjksahWTF) & Shame, featuring far less raunchy content than I was expecting. preferred the former to the latter, even despite the Huge Jaw of Ridiculousness.
- The Descendants. oh, George-- really? zzzzz. (five minutes into the movie I realised I'd read the book a year or so back. or, more accurately, I'd tried to. I gave up out of sheer boredom. the movie reached the same dizzy heights of underachievement, sadly.)

today was one of those perfect spring Sundays-- long, lazy & lovely. we slept late, then decided on an impromptu roadtrip out of town for a late lunch. we ended up at Artrio cafe in Waimate, on the recommendation of my dad & stepmum, who had visited there last week. it's a tiny art gallery/cafe run by three Malaysian brothers, & the food, coffee & service are all amazing. I don't think I've ever had such attentive service before at any place, ever--these guys are truly awesome.

on the way back home, we stopped at Butler's Berry Barn for sundaes: huge, delicious raspberries & blackberries in a sauce together with a generous scoop of french vanilla ice cream. SO GOOD. ♥

I have spent the past seven days or so reading a lot of lotrips. A LOT. there is still plenty left for me to read, but as I work my way through, I've been making note of the stories I have enjoyed along the way, & so: a rec post. of sorts, anyway. I am sure a lot of these have already been bookmarked & read & re-read by countless people before me, but they're all new discoveries to me, & just maybe they'll be new to someone else, too. :)

* a short guide to the benefits of organisation by cupiscent (miranda otto/karl urban)
Miranda isn't one of those actors who's in the job because she pretends all the time anyway, so she might as well get paid for it. There are plenty of those around. Sometimes Karl suspects he's one of them. But not Miranda. She slips into a role, slips out, like a dress. Beneath, she's unchanged, steady, the list of herself made, and enumerated, and constantly checked off. New parts added, old parts crossed off, the whole always balanced. Natural. Organised.

* trojan horse by cupiscent (miranda otto/viggo mortensen/karl urban)
Have your cake and eat it too, thought Karl.

(um, yes. this one has a delicious little twist.)

* amazing (the city sins) by cupiscent (miranda otto/viggo mortensen)
Miranda always surprises Viggo.

* make the man by cesare (viggo mortensen/orlando bloom)
"Just can't help noticing you seem a little preoccupied." Viggo crosses his arms and leans in the doorway. The shirt has, hand to God, elastisized white cuffs straining around the swordplay-corded muscles of Viggo's forearms. There's a similar white band round the waist that rides up a bit. Orlando feels hysteria threaten.

(ahahaha, Orlando has issues with the way Viggo dresses. )

* silence is deep as eternity, speech is shallow as time by mirabile_dictu (viggo/orlando)
Bernard opened his mouth to argue further, so Viggo put a hand over it. Leaning forward, he rested his head against Bernard's. They stood like that for nearly a minute, Viggo breathing evenly, calming himself, calming Bernard. He was aware of Orlando's presence like a minor sun at his side, exciting the electrons, shooting them into new orbits. He slowly pulled away. "Go back to the pub," Viggo said. "I promise, I give you my word that everything is all right."

(I loved this image of Viggo so much-- the touching of heads, the calming breaths. it was a lovely touch of realness in amongst it all.)

& okay, you should read pretty much everything by traveller, because the Viggo she writes is the Viggo in my head, & it sort of makes me ache in the best way. but here's three to get you started.

* body & soul revisited (viggo/orlando)
If you asked Viggo what his favorite time of day was, sometimes he would say that every hour was each as precious as the next, and sometimes he would say it was whatever time it was that he got those two hours of sleep, and sometimes he'd shrug and say, "Tuesday."

* (to viggo on his forty-sixth birthday)
it's not that he hates his reflection, mind, it's just that he's a bit tired of it. forty-five, no, forty-six years of this chin, this nose, this forehead. forty years of that scar, almost thirty years of that one, that one that splits his beard at a lightning sharp angle and reminds him daily that he's frequently been a fool.

* thirty stories about one word
So one Sunday he goes out the farm late, when the sun is crawling from the canyons to the sea: he needs to see for himself, and he does. He sees a bony young man with long legs and dun-colored hunt jacket on the back of that goofy, awkward horse, he sees them together approach a shoulder high rail and sail over it with thoughtless ease, as if they were about to simply take flight. Bellerophon and Pegasus, he thinks. The gods are among us still.

(this last one is probably my favourite of all, & I have lost count of the times I have read & re-read it. ♥)
